Top-of-the-range Conference Centre with a Twist

10th May 2010

UCLan’s major refurbishment of Westleigh House is opening soon.

If you ever wanted to get married in a unique location then a former nuclear bunker could be the place for you.

The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) has restored Westleigh House to create top-of-the-range conferencing and banqueting facilities for both the University and wider community use.

Located just outside the city centre in Lea, the one-time disaster nerve centre, complete with former Cold War bunker, has been transformed. The centre comprises of the following facilities:

• A large conference room available to seat up to 250 people for all occasions
• Various smaller meeting rooms available for meetings and training sessions
• Separate dining area with lounge and bar facilities
• Teaching and seminar rooms
• State-of-the-art conferencing technology equipment in all rooms, complete with full wireless coverage
• Breakout spaces
• Exterior covered terrace overlooking impressive grounds

The 19th century mansion house, which was previously used for emergency planning, will open for business on August 1st, bookings now being taken.

Andy Coverdale, Business Services Manager for Facilities Management, said: “The building and grounds have been sensitively restored to create first-class facilities.

"We will use the premises primarily as the University’s off campus conference centre to complement our educational delivery on the Preston campus. The property also provides an opportunity to give the surrounding area top-of-the-range facilities which will enhance the wider community.

"It’s in an ideal location for the University as it is adjoined to our top sporting facility UCLan Sports Arena and it’s envisaged that both these facilities complement each other and provide resources for the local community."
