Game On For Preston In Guild Year

29th July 2010

Proud Preston has received another major boost to its fast-approaching Guild celebrations having been named a European City of Sport for 2012.

It follows the news that the city will host the 19th UK Corporate Games in 2012 – the 800th anniversary of the Guild, an event only held every 20 years.

Lancashire and Blackpool conference chiefs believe the sporting double will prove a major boost for business tourism, putting the focus on all that Preston has to offer.

Preston joins cities, including Madrid, as a City of Sport. It increases the likelihood of one of the Olympic nations having their base there.

Lancashire & Blackpool Conferences & Meetings, a joint initiative of Lancashire and Blackpool Tourist Board and visitBlackpool, welcomed the award.

Tony Openshaw, Director of Marketing, Lancashire and Blackpool Tourist Board (LBTB), said: “This is fantastic news for Guild Year which is already sparking increased interest in the area as a destination for conferences and meetings.

“We have strong and varied facilities for conferences and meetings throughout the area, with extra special venues that are unique in what they offer and the City of Sport award puts them firmly in the spotlight.

“These vary from top-of-the-range hotels and venues, with the very latest technology and amenities, to fabulous country house hotels and historic halls on the outskirts of the city, offering business visitors a refreshing, relaxing and inspiring location.”
